At Hasçelik, there are many valuable people who have dedicated years of their lives to the steel industry. One of them is Orhan Şahin, affectionately called “Orhan Baba” by his colleagues. Having worked at Hasçelik’s Cold Processing Center for more than 10 years, Şahin stands out with both his professional experience and his calm personality. We had a pleasant short conversation with him.
– Could you please introduce yourself?
My name is Orhan Şahin. I am 55 years old, married, and the father of two children. One of my children is a veterinarian, and the other works as a midwife nurse. I began my professional career in glass factories; I stepped into the steel industry with Hasçelik, and for the past 10 years I have been working here as a cold drawing operator. Although I retired 4 years ago, I continue working because I love my job. I am a Galatasaray fan and nowadays I make sure to follow especially the European matches. In my spare time, I love driving around – sometimes with my family, sometimes on my own.
– Despite being 55 years old, you look quite young. Also, where does the nickname “Orhan Baba” come from? 😊
There is no secret formula to staying young (laughs). I owe it to staying calm and, of course, constantly working. Professional life keeps a person fit. As for the nickname “Orhan Baba,” I think it comes from the love and respect my colleagues feel for me.
– What do you like most about your job?
At Hasçelik, there is a work environment focused on respect and support. Every employee feels valued and comfortable here. The opportunities provided also increase my motivation. Since I enjoy my work, I have been here for 10 years. Previously, I worked in different industries, mainly in the glass sector, but the sense of belonging I feel at Hasçelik is much stronger.
– What is your biggest motivation to come to work every morning?
We spend a large part of our day at work. For me, Hasçelik is not just a workplace; it is also a sincere and friendly environment where I meet with my colleagues. Like many of my coworkers, this is the place where I spend the most time after my family. Conversations over tea and coffee, and the sharing of ideas about work, increase my motivation.
– What advice would you give to colleagues who are just starting as operators?
First of all, they should pay attention to occupational health and safety. Even though our job may seem simple, it requires care and attention. For someone who is organized, disciplined, and eager to learn, this is the right place. The way to learn the job is through effort. They should never hesitate to ask questions when they struggle; this way, they improve themselves and their managers will surely notice their effort.
– What has been the happiest moment for you in these 10 years?
The seniority awards given every five years have great meaning, as they are an acknowledgment of our efforts. In addition, being in a healthy and harmonious working environment with my colleagues also makes me extremely happy.
– Who would you like to thank in your professional life?
I would like to thank my manager at that time, Mr. Erdal, who brought me to Hasçelik. I have also learned a lot from all the colleagues I have worked with during my career. I would like to extend my thanks to all of them.
– Are there values you took from your family that you reflect in your professional life?
I received the foundations of morality, respect, and love from my family. Life experiences reinforce these values even more. As one grows older, one’s perspective on life also matures.
