42CrMo4 , also known as chrome-molybdenum steel, belongs to the group of low-alloy quenched and tempered steels and contains the alloying elements chromium (Cr) and molybdenum (Mo). This steel is commonly produced and shaped into rolls, plates, bars, or cast parts, thanks to its excellent mechanical properties and wide range of applications.
42CrMo4 is classified under several international standards:
AISI/SAE: 4140
DIN: 1.7225
AFNOR (France): 42 CD 4
Turkish Standard (TS EN 10250): 42CrMo4
Thanks to its alloying elements, 42CrMo4 exhibits outstanding mechanical properties:
Tensile strength (MPa): 655 - 1650 (depending on heat treatment)
Yield strength (MPa): 417.1
Hardness (HV): 210 - 350 (pre-stressed condition)
Density (g/cm³): 7.7 – 8.03
Elongation at break (%): 25.7
Impact toughness (J): 54.5
Influence of Alloying Elements:
Chromium (Cr): Enhances corrosion resistance, hardness, and wear resistance. Chromium carbides, such as Cr7C3 and Cr23C6, allow for deeper hardening.
Molybdenum (Mo): Improves toughness and strength, particularly after tempering.
The properties of 42CrMo4 can be significantly altered through heat treatment, depending on its intended use:
Hot forming: 850 - 1050 °C
Normalizing: 840 - 880 °C
Annealing: 680 - 720 °C
Quenching: 820 - 860 °C (water or oil cooling)
After quenching, a martensitic structure is formed, which can be further improved through tempering at approximately 315 °C. This enhances toughness, tensile strength, and weldability.
Due to its high strength, toughness, and hardenability, 42CrMo4 is particularly valued in the automotive and machinery industries. Typical applications include:
Transmission shafts
Piston rods
Gears
Crankshafts
42CrMo4 (4140) is an alloyed quenched and tempered steel, highly valued for its chromium (Cr) and molybdenum (Mo) content. Through heat treatments such as hardening, this steel can develop a martensitic microstructure with high hardness and strength. At the same time, it offers an exceptional combination of toughness, ductility, and mechanical durability. These properties make 42CrMo4 one of the most versatile steels in the manufacturing industry, particularly in machining.
Typical applications include:
Machinery manufacturing: Shafts, axles, gears, and crankshafts.
Automotive industry: Suspension parts, engine components, and spring elements.
Aerospace: Aircraft components and turbine engines.
Construction: Structural components with high strength requirements.
Other applications: Brake rings, springs, ship anchor chains, cold-drawn materials, and starter gears.
The main difference lies in their chemical composition, particularly in the sulfur (S) content:
42CrMo4:
Carbon (C): 0.38–0.45%
Silicon (Si): 0.15–0.40%
Manganese (Mn): 0.50–0.80%
Chromium (Cr): 0.90–1.20%
Molybdenum (Mo): 0.15–0.30%
Sulfur (S): max. 0.035%
42CrMoS4:
Carbon (C): 0.38–0.45%
Silicon (Si): up to 0.40%
Manganese (Mn): 0.60–0.90%
Chromium (Cr): 0.90–1.20%
Molybdenum (Mo): 0.15–0.30%
Sulfur (S): 0.02–0.04%
With its higher sulfur content, 42CrMoS4 has better machinability, making it particularly suitable for producing complex parts in machining processes.
Quenched and tempered steels like 42CrMo4 are characterized by a unique combination of hardness, toughness, and formability. Thanks to their high strength and hardness, they are ideal for large, thick-walled components. Additionally, quenched and tempered steels can be optimized for specific requirements through additional processes such as induction or flame hardening.
Main Groups and Properties of Quenched and Tempered Steels
Quenched and tempered steels are classified into four main groups based on their chemical composition:
Unalloyed quenched and tempered steels
Manganese-alloyed quenched and tempered steels
Chromium-alloyed quenched and tempered steels
Chromium-molybdenum-alloyed quenched and tempered steels
The Relationship Between Carbon Content and Quenching Strength in Unalloyed Steels
In unalloyed steels, quenching strength increases with carbon content.
For diameters up to 16 mm, the minimum yield strength ranges between 370 N/mm² (for 0.25% C) and 570 N/mm² (for 0.50% C).
For diameters between 16 mm and 40 mm, the yield strength is reduced by 50-80 N/mm².
Manganese-Alloyed Quenched and Tempered Steels
Manganese significantly enhances the hardenability of steels.
In steels like 30Mn4 and 40Mn4, the yield strength exhibits similar properties to C60 steel.
Chromium-Alloyed Quenched and Tempered Steels
Chromium improves both hardenability and ductility significantly.
For example, 40Cr4 steel achieves a minimum yield strength of 700 N/mm² for diameters ranging between 16 mm and 40 mm.
Chromium-Molybdenum-Alloyed Quenched and Tempered Steels
Molybdenum enhances hardenability even more than chromium and improves tempering resistance. It reduces the risk of temper brittleness and increases fatigue strength.

Products
