S355JR (St52) – 1.0045 steel is a type of steel used in structural and engineering applications. Due to its wide use in various industrial sectors, it is an important construction steel.
S355JR:
The letter "S" stands for "Structural" (i.e., construction steel).
The number "355" indicates the minimum yield strength, i.e., 355 MPa (megapascals).
The symbol "JR" refers to the toughness and impact resistance of the steel. "JR" means that the steel achieves a specific toughness level after a Charpy impact test at room temperature (20°C).
St52:
The term "St52" originates from the German DIN standard.
The letters "St" stand for "Steel" (i.e., steel).
The number "52" indicates the tensile strength, approximately 490-630 MPa N/mm².
S355JR steel , produced according to the EN 10025-2 standard, is known for its high strength, good machinability, and suitability for various industrial applications. Due to its chemical composition and mechanical properties, it is used in a wide range of sectors such as construction, mechanical engineering, the automotive industry, and the energy sector. It is a preferred material for various engineering projects.
Used in large constructions such as bridges, skyscrapers, and stadiums for foundational and load-bearing elements.
Preferred in industrial buildings, factory halls, warehouses, and plants for various structural components.
Used in residential construction projects, high-rise buildings, and apartments.
Employed in structural components of oil and gas drilling platforms.
Preferred as a durable and corrosion-resistant material for ship decks and marine structures.
Used in the production of structural pipelines for oil, gas, and water lines.
Ideal for use in railway projects, including bridges, track beams, and other structural components of the rail network.
S355JR has various equivalents in different countries and standards. These include, among others, St52 according to the German DIN standard and A572 and A678Gr.A according to the US standard.

Yield Strength: Yield strength is the maximum stress a material can withstand before it undergoes plastic deformation. The minimum yield strength of 355 MPa in S355JR steel is an important indicator of the resistance of steel structures.
Tensile Strength: Tensile strength describes the maximum stress the steel can withstand before breaking. With a tensile strength of 490–630 MPa, S355JR steel offers high strength and safety for various applications.
Elastic Modulus (Young’s Modulus): The elastic modulus describes the resistance of a material to elastic deformation. The elastic modulus of approximately 210 GPa determines the stiffness and resistance of the steel to deformation.
Impact Toughness: The Charpy V-notch impact test evaluates the behavior of the material under impact loading. S355JR steel has a minimum impact toughness of 27 Joules at room temperature, indicating its resistance to impacts and shocks.
Carbon (C): The carbon content is a key factor in determining the mechanical properties of the steel. The low carbon content in S355JR steel enhances machinability while maintaining high strength and durability.
Manganese (Mn): Manganese gives the steel strength and hardness. The maximum manganese content of 1.60% in S355JR steel supports its high strength properties.
Silicon (Si): Silicon increases the steel's resistance to oxidation and lowers the melting point. The maximum silicon content of 0.55% in S355JR steel improves machinability and weldability.
Phosphorus (P) and Sulfur (S): These elements can cause undesirable properties in the steel, so their maximum values are limited. The low phosphorus and sulfur content in S355JR steel contributes to better machinability and overall steel quality.
This table shows the general limits for the chemical composition of S355JR steel. These values may slightly vary depending on the project and manufacturer.
